The Bachelor: Breaking it Down

I caved. The social pressures got to me and somehow I ended up watching The Bachelor, for the first time all the way through. I was never really against the show, I was just never for it. The concept is ridiculous. One man expected to find his true love among too many dramatic, yet beautiful, women. If we’re being honest, we watch the show for the entertainment factor, not for the hope that the young bachelor will find his happily ever after. What does that say about us? I’d rather not think about it. We watch to judge the girls, pick our favorites, and get ideas for our dream date.

I liked the show on the superficial level, only because there is no other deeper level to the show. I watched with the basic white girl phrase “I can’t even” coming out of my mouth at each part I found outrageous, about every other scene. I cringed at the girls on screen and every awkward, dramatic, and unbelievably cheesy thing they did or said. That being said, I’ll probably keep watching it, mostly for the social aspect (I like to know what my friends are talking about), but partly because I hope Olivia and her cankles go home next week.

  2. I totally fell in love with the show Psych a few years ago for the same reason. My roommates all watched it, and all my FHE brothers, and all my neighbors, etc. I decided to try it out, and I was hooked!

I have friends who play a sort of "fantasy football" with the Bachelor by making guesses of who will go home, etc. It's interesting how people will sometimes allow shows to become part of their lives like that.

  3. I have never had friends who watch the Bachelor, but I know the feeling. It's nice being able to talk shows with your friends! At least you accept and admit why you really watch the show.

  4. I love your post, but I do have to disagree with one thing. I love it on the superficial level, but I do think it's possibel to love it on a deeper level too. I love analyzing all of the characters and thinking about why they react the way that they do. I think about things from their point of view - how much it really would suck to be in any of their positions and how most of us would crack under that pressure too. I've actually learned a lot from watching the Bachelor and their relationships, and I've learned to be more self-aware of how things I do might come off to others who are watching relationships from the outside. I do agree that it's an addicting show!
